What to Wear for Your Winter Family Photo Session (Without Anyone Freezing or Having a Meltdown)

"What should we wear?"
I get asked this before almost every single session.
And I love this question because it tells me the family is excited, they're thinking about it, they want it to be beautiful. But I also know that standing in front of your wardrobe the night before a shoot with three kids asking what's for dinner is… a lot.
So here's everything I tell my families. The short version: it is so much simpler than you think.
Jeans and a knit is genuinely all you need. Some of my favourite sessions have been the simplest outfits, because when the clothes are relaxed, the people are relaxed.

The 6 Rules I Give Every Family
1. Start with the kids. Always. Pick their outfits first something warm, comfortable and easy to move in. If they're uncomfortable, they will absolutely let everyone know about it. Once the kids are sorted, build the rest of the family's outfits around them.
2. Go tonal, not matching. You don't need everyone in the same outfit that can actually look a bit stiff. Instead, stay in the same colour family. Warm neutrals, dusty tones, creams, and knits all sit beautifully together without looking too coordinated or try-hard.
3. Knits are everything. Chunky knits, oversized cardigans, soft scarves they look incredible in photos AND they actually keep everyone warm. It's the rare styling win that's also completely practical.
4. Layer up, you can always peel back. Start everyone rugged up. Once the session gets going and the kids are running around, we can always remove a layer. Much easier than trying to add layers to a cold, cranky toddler mid-shoot.
5. Avoid logos and busy prints. They date photos faster than almost anything else and pull the eye away from faces which is the last thing you want. Plain textures and simple patterns always photograph better and age beautifully.
6. Don't overthink it. Jeans and a knit. That's it. That's the whole tip. Some of my most beautiful winter sessions have been the most simply dressed families because relaxed clothes mean relaxed people, and relaxed people make the best photos.

What Actually Works for Winter in the Shire
For context most of my winter sessions happen at golden hour across locations like Darook Park, Greenhills Beach, Lilli Pilli Point and Kurnell. It can get cool, especially once the sun starts to drop, so comfort really does matter.
Here's what I see working beautifully time and time again:
For mums: An oversized knit or cardigan, wide or straight leg jeans, simple boots or bare feet. You do not need to buy anything new. What do you actually feel like yourself in? Start there.
For dads: A simple shirt or knit, jeans, clean sneakers or boots. Nothing complicated.
For kids: Layered! A long sleeve underneath, a knit or puffer on top that can come off. Comfortable shoes they can actually run in. And if you're coming to a beach or park location, bring spare socks.
Colour palette to aim for: Cream, oatmeal, warm white, dusty sage, tan, camel, rust, terracotta, chocolate brown. All work beautifully in winter light.
Colours to avoid: Bright white (it blows out in sunlight), neon, or very dark navy/black as the only colour it can feel heavy. Dark tones work, but balance them with something lighter.

Still Not Sure? Just Ask.
If you're stuck, don't stress in your session planning video call you can show me all your options and I'll help you pull it together. I'll ask a few questions about your family's vibe and send some inspo your way too it doesn't have to be complicated.
That's part of what I do.
You don't need a perfectly styled family. You just need to show up. I'll take care of the rest.
